Julissa Ferreras, Council Member for the 21st District of the New York City Council

Elected in 2009, Ferreras was the first Latina elected to political office in Queens, but she got her start in politics at the tender age of 14, when she was appointed to serve on the Corona Youth Council. Ferreras is the first woman and person of color to serve as the Chair of the City Council’s Committee of Finance, overseeing the city’s $75.3 billion budget. Of particular interest to LOLA, Ferreras proposed a bill in 2015 that would require free tampons and pads in public school bathrooms and homeless shelters, and provide greater access to these products in jails and prisons.
