What’s your first period story?

What’s your first period story?

It’s become our favorite question to ask the LOLA community. And no matter how many times we inquire, your answers continue to surprise us, make us laugh or tear up, and bring us together over the experience all women share: first period stories.

From LOLA’s #FirstPeriodFridays series on Instagram.

We recently decided to take the conversation further, surveying our community about their first period experience. The answers were both reinforcing and insightful:

· Over 60% of you said you did not feel prepared for your first period.

· When asked where you were when you got your first period, the most common response was home, followed by school, and your friend’s house.

· Overwhelmingly, the first person you told was a family member: be they your mom, dad, sister or grandmother.

· Similarly, the majority of you used pads as your first period product. But some of you got creative, using toilet paper, paper towels… even a sock!

· We asked what emotion you most associate with your first period, and your responses ran the gamut. You were excited, scared, confused, happy, shocked, embarrassed, and nervous.

Whether your first period was a positive or negative experience, we’ve loved hearing your stories. We also love a good roundup, which is why we’ve combed through the thousands of responses we’ve received over the years to pick out a few of our favorites. Here are some of the best first period stories from the LOLA community.

13 of our favorite first period stories

“I got my first period when I was in 4th grade in Japan. All I remember is that my mom made “Sekihan”, glutinous rice with red beans, which is a traditional celebration food in Japan. I’m sure fewer and fewer people do this tradition nowadays to celebrate the first period and becoming a woman, but it’s still common to eat this for celebrations such as weddings, birthdays, graduations, etc.” — Mina

“I remember I was 12 and I got it the night before the next school day and just completely chose to ignore the fact that I was bleeding… so, I went to school and leaked through my jeans and had to wear my huge coat over my hips the entire day at school because I was too embarrassed to tell anyone! I think at that point I was like, ‘Yep, I think it’s time I share with my mom.’” — Mnatalla

“My first period story happens to be very different from many menstruating humans. I was 16 years old and still didn’t have my period. We found out I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones — I wasn’t able to naturally produce a period without the assistance of birth control.” — Ivanka

“I got my first period while playing video games with my older brother in bright yellow pants. He looked down and told me, ‘Uhhh…go talk to Mom. Look at your pants.’ I said, ‘It’s probably ketchup!”, thinking he was trying to distract me from winning. Then he yelled “MOM!!! She got her period!!!’” — Meher

“I got my first period during Water Week at an all-girls sleepaway camp. My whole cabin rallied together to try to teach me how to use a tampon (when I struggled, one girl even offered to do it for me). No tampons, and no water activities, happened that week.”— Emma

“I got my first period when I was 10. It happened within the last hour of school and I remember calling my mom in a nervous fit. She told me that since I don’t have pads, to wrap toilet paper around my underwear and that should work well enough for the time being. When she picked me up that day, she had bought me new underwear, showed me how to use a pad and put two more in my backpack, washed my bloody undies for me, and told me, “Don’t worry, this is perfectly normal.” — Meisha

“I got my first period on Thanksgiving. At first I thought the cramps were from the turkey.” — Caroline

“I’m sitting on the toilet, peeing, as my mother barges into the bathroom. This is normal in my Latinx household. What is privacy to my mother who gave birth to me? She’s washing her hands when she looks at me and says “Te llego la menstruacion.” I look down at my underwear immediately in horror, disbelief but more than anything, really confused. I had gotten my first real period. I was a sixth grader 10 days away from my 12th birthday, and my mother was the one who noticed I got my period before I did.” — Andra

“I used to get in trouble for jumping over fire hydrants. I was a tomboy. One day I came up short and hit my pelvic bone. The next day I unknowingly got my first period. [I was] so scared of getting in trouble for hopping over the hydrant. I told my mom a day later, thinking I was bleeding from hitting that hydrant. She goes, ‘Girl you have your period.’ and walked off. That night my dad explained everything and bought me some pads.” — Cocoa

“I was 10 years old and got up in class to use the restroom and had blood on my skirt. The teacher sent me to the office and my working mama told them to call our emergency contact to come and take me home. And that’s how I found out about periods from my grandma! She was open, honest, and patient which is exactly what I needed. She also gave me chocolate.” — Amy

“I got my first period when I was 13, on my birthday, on a family trip to Disney World. Splash Mountain will never be the same.” — Meg

“I was 11 when I got mine. I remember everyone telling me I was wayyyyyy too young to start it. But I was super excited, because my mom took me out late at night and let me pick out a cute little purse to buy. Then we spent the rest of the night playing old Mario games, until we fell asleep. I’ll never forget that night.” —Ang

“I got mine when I was in 7th grade and I was too nervous to tell my mom…so I went to school the next day with paper towels. Worst. Idea. Ever. I finally texted her in the middle of the day (after telling my friends) and she brought me pads and chocolate. My dad bought me roses when I got home. Fun times.” — Makayla

So, what’s your first period story? Tell us in the comments.

  • Im 11. Soo when I was around seven I read these princess book series. They were middle schoolers and I read that they were talking about periods. I had nooo idea what they were. I thought it was the period at the end of sentences, but that made no sense. So I asked my mom. “You’ll learn when you get older”. She never told me about it. So one day in third grade I was sitting in class feeling weird. I did nothing about it. Thank god I was wearing black leggings that day. 8 year old me came home and told my mom. My 6 months younger cousin hasn’t gotten it and alwaysss jokes about it. She has no idea I got it 3 years ago. Last part was extra, sorry. Pigeon qwen

  • I was 12 years old and I was getting into the shower and I noticed a little blood and I was like, ” I wonder if I got my period.” My Mom told explained it to me when I was 10 years old. The I woke up and realized that I was on my period. Then I got ready for school and got a pad. I very clearly remember dressing in dark colors. The other days I had cramps and was moody. I also experience migraines.

  • I am 11 year old My periods started 5 months ago when I woke up I saw Red stain I was alone with my brother of college I go and cried at the chest of my brother he told me everything about periods And after that he always takecare of my I love him bestest brother.😍💕

    • It depends on your body when you get your period. Even I got my periods at the age of 10, but most girls get at the age of 12 or 13. You may get your period in the age of not less than 7 and not more than the age of 15.

  • I was 13. We went to a baseball game with some friends. I went to the bathroom and thought “Great, my stoumach is upset” when I saw the brown dried up blood. When I woke up the next morning, I saw more but still thought it was just that I had an upset stomach. Just to be on the safe side, I put on a really small liner. Later that day, I went out to eat with my mom. The whole time, I felt wet and uncomfortable. I had been having a little discharge so I guessed thats what it was. When we got home, my mother dropped me off and went to the store to go grocery shopping. I went to the bathroom and my underwear was soaked with blood. I ran into my room and grabbed a pad from the box. Then, I called my mother. I was totally calm but my mother was freaking out.
“Oh my gosh! Do you need me to come home?”
“No, but can you get me some pads and dark chocolate?”
“Of corse. I’ll be as quick as I can.”

  • I was 12 years old when I got mine. A month before, I had gotten brown discharge, and went I got it again the night before I started, I had a feeling my period was coming. So that night I wore a pantyliner and went to sleep as usual. The next morning, I woke up and went downstairs, forgetting about the liner in my underwear. Eventually I went to the bathroom, and lo and behold, there it was in all its bloody glory. I had actually slept in my sisters room that night (for no real reason), so I was very happy that I had worn a liner and didn’t stain her carpet. I called for my mom, who I knew was sitting at the table close to the bathroom, and she came and opened the door a crack.
    “What’s up?” She said
“I think I started my period.” I blurted ( I had known what it was for a while and had actually been looking forward to it lol)
    “Really?” She asked.
“Yeah. Could you get me one of the always infinity with flex foam size 1 or teen pads from out bathroom upstairs?” I muttered ( I had also spent time memorizing the names of our products. I was a little obsessed, not to mention nervous so I was spewing any and all information.)
    “Uh sure.”
It seemed like a lifetime before she came back.
    *knock knock*
“Is this it?” She asked holding it through the door.
I took it and put it on, and walked out.
She asked if I wanted to tell my dad or if she should, and I told her too. It wasn’t that bad, tbh. Man I love my mom. She does everything for me even when I’m being annoying (I’m on my period now so maybe I’m a little fine tuned into my emotions run)

  • I wanted to get it so bad but it just wouldn’t show up for a few years. When it finally did, I couldn’t believe it was real so I just kind of ignored it. As a result, I ruined my really cute pyjama bottoms. Now many years later I have no idea why I wanted it so much as a preteen.

  • I got mine when i was nearly 13 years old. It was a couple days before easter and in greece (where I live) , there is atradition that 40 days before easter we don’ t eat meat, fish, dairy products and poultry. I couldn’t wait for getting my first period. I noticed a brownish liquid but I wasn’t sure. The next day, when I was totaly sure, I told my mom and she gave me some pads. Another tradition is that the mom makes her child a dessert, but as long as we couldn’t eat all those things I mentioned before she bought me ” loukumades” something like doughnuts. We spend the whole night waching movies (it was easter holiday) and we had a great time. I will always remember that day. Also, on easter day, I went to my aunt’s house near the beach, so my cousins wanted to go swimming. I couldn’t swim but my mother and my other aunt sitted with me, so I wasn’t that sad.

  • I got my period when I was 11 I was in the fifth grade in the middle of science. We were talking ABOUT periods lol. *what a coincidence* I jumped out of my seat and yelled “I GOT MY PERIOD” And ran into the boys washroom without looking I pulled down my pants and underwear in front of at least 3 boys and my crush. I didn’t tell my parents for a week.

  • I got my period when I was 10, my period lasted for 4 days and I never told my parents because I was too embarrassed. I told my male friend and he was very supportive and helpful. Finally, the second time I had my period i came up with the courage to tell my mum.

  • I have not gotten my period yet but my mom had a very embarrassing first period story. She was trying out for cheerleading when her period came and she has no idea. It was at the start and her friend told her that she got her period. Whenever got to try out

  • So I got my period at 10 on July 4 actually after my birthday June 4, and it was about 4:00 pm and i was eating nicks if you don’t know it’s in Chicago and later on about 6:00 I needed to “poop” but I was just having cramps and I wiped 😂 and it was light red nothing really in my panies and later on late at night I needed to poop but really cramps and I wiped it was a brownish red I saw my pannies same thing and I looked how to tell my mom lolzz… and I asked my sister how to tell her bc the website wasn’t giving me what I need and she told me to tell my mom so I did and my other sister gave me a pad and my mom gave me some information so yeppppp 😂😂😊😊

  • So when i got mine i was 13 and it was on 28th may. That day i actuall woke up and felt really happy and i was in a good mood lol. When i finished my breakfast i went upstairs to the toilet. I wiped and saw like red brown pink stuff. I got kinda scared and wiped again. And sure enough it was blood. (But tbh there was’t any in my pants so idk what happend there xD). Anyway i called mah mum to come up and she came in and ask “has the blood come?” and i just nodded being the scared girl i was then. (It was at around 9.45 when i got it so if it wasn’t for corona i would’ve gotten it at school XD). She gave me some pads and i put one in. It was thursday and at the weekend we would’ve been going to a scout camp thing, which wasn’t on cuz of coronaaaaa, so again there i was lucky xD. When i came out she asked if i was ok and if Christine, my twin sisters bff could still come round. Ofc i said yes bc i didn’t want either of them gettin’ sus. Anyway nobody noticed so that was good 😉
Anyway yeah i’ve been kinda lucky with it i guess XD

  • OMG …I got my periods five days after new year . so thirteen years ago … i was sleeping in my grand parents room because my sis kicks me in my room .. i felt like something was wet …… i thought it was my period { because i longed for one because my friend already had hers } i ran straight to bathroom , but nope it was not my period . and in the morning i went to the bathroom and to my surprise my periods !!! …. i told my mom and she gave a big pack pads ….and now i am mother of two twin daughter at the age of 10 i am exited to she them grow…….

  • I was a tiny, barely 12-year-old 7th grader. Only two girls in my grade had gotten it. Neither were in my friend group of me and two other girls (and a few boys, but there was no way in hell I was going to tell THEM, being as immature as they were), but I had giggled through fifth grade puberty talk, and somehow I remembered it. The night of the school auction and my mom ran the auction. My dad was at the auction too and I was babysitting my 9-year-old brother. I ran to my upstairs bathroom to pee, leaving him downstairs watching tv. That’s when I discovered the red stuff in my undies. I had ran into a gate on my bike the other day, so I assumed I had cut my vajayjay. No. I put on a pad anyway and when no blood was on it after like five minutes (I was dumb) I took off the pad. I ruined three pairs of undies that night, not wanting to admit to myself that I had started my period. Finally, when my mom came home veeeery late at night, I ran in while she was in the shower and showed her my ruined three undies. She affirmed that it was my period, and I emailed my closest girl friend. Caroline is older than my by almost a year, but didn’t get it until way after me. That whole week at school I spent giggling in the school hallways with her and Rayna, who was also older than me and periodless. They basically took turns asking me if I was ok, LOL. I was also the first of me, Caroline, and Rayna to try a tampon.

  • I had cramps the night before, I thought I had appendicites…. Next morning, I saw brown when I wiped after going to the bathroom, and a drop of brown on my bed, I thought it was diarrhea… Later on when I was studying I felt something come out from the middle hole, that is when I realized, oh me dummy I probably had my period! Asked my mom whether periods could be that dark, and she said yes

  • I was in 7th grade and I found out I that I got my period by staining my seat in science. I got yelled at by my FEMALE science teacher. Luckily like all the girls in my class stood up for me

  • I was 12, just turned actually, when I got my first period. It happened one Saturday when I was eating some snacks and my stomach started to hurt really badly (Which I later learned were period cramps.) I went to the bathroom and my panties were soaked with blood. The toilet water was also red and same was the tp when I wiped. I actually didn’t think it was my period at first because all women in my family had gotten theirs at 14. I was so scared because I thought I had somehow ruined my stomach from eating those snacks! So in a panic, I showed my mom. Nope, just turns out it was my period! (Fun fact, cramps and heavy flows are not good for 12 year olds doing distance learning ;v)

  • i started my period on 13 Nov 2018 . it was so embarrassing because it happened when i was riding bicycle with my 6 year old sister . first i felt wet but i just continued riding , after that my grandma who was walking along saw blood in my cycle seat !!!!!she took me home and my mom gave me a pad . my little sister who was watching all this shouted you are dying ! i said um no actually the cycle was sharp its just a wound i kept a band aid . she believed it !!!!! now its gonna be 2 year on 13 Th Nov

  • i started my periods today last year , i was 11 and i already knew about periods because my elder sis got hers and she is only one year elder than me so she told every thing to me . on Nov 5 2019 i woke up that morning and went to rest room i saw something brown red i just ignored it [ what a fool i was ] after that i went to bath and washed my underwear . the stain stayed there ! then i sat for my classes in school , i felt wet , i went to the restroom and ta da my periods ! i asked my teacher a pad and she called my mom . in the car my mom said Congrats ! you have become a women !

  • I told my mom that i started my period one day even though i really didnt. She gave me all the supplies. I told her I started because all my other friends started and I wanted to feel more grown up…. 3 days later at age 12 my mom was at the store and my underwear felt a little wet, I just thought it was discharge but hen I used the restroom my underwear was bloody and red! I pulled out the pads she gave me three days earlier put one on and I was done. If I hadnt faked my period a couple days earlier then I would have been at a lost when I started because my mom was gone.

  • ok , so i stated my periods at 11 , i was in 6th grade . after i came back from school i felt my stomach was paining . I thought that was the cake i ate before , and i went to take a shower . Red spots from me ! i was fainting . I shouted as loud as possible my mom came running . She said noting to worry and gave me a pad to wear . now its been 4 years of my period.

  • i got my first periods today . i was sitting for my online class , i felt wet and i ran to the restroom . i saw blood all over my panties !!!! i ran to mom she asked me to drink oil and raw egg [ it is a tradition in India i think ] she gave me a pad . My younger sister who was 5 asked me what just happened to me . my mom saved me by scolding her, this is none of your business. i am 11 years , my mom said i was very young to start because she started at 13 .

    • Congrats, Shine. You’re not young for your first period because 11 is normal these days even though 13 was normal for your mom a long time ago. Also, please tell your little sister that you’re fine. She was worried and got yelled at. That happened to me. Made me scared of asking questions for years. Enjoy being a preteen.

  • Lol. Ok so I got my first period when I was 11. I was in 6th grade and it was right before school started. A good thing was that I got to call in sick. But my mom told all of my relatives as that it the tradition in India. I was so embarrassed though. I’m like aahhh ok because she told all of the men too. 😬

  • i got my first period at my birthday party and its a tradition in my family to wear white on birthdays. It was a bowling party and i got to bowl the first time and everyone was behind me watching. So i bent over and bowled it went in the gutter. NO ONE TOLD ME UNTIL I GOT HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This my second period story I was in band (2 classes before lunch) I felt something wet down there but I thought it was discharge when I got to lunch I went to the bathroom a saw a giant blood stain lucky I was wearing black pants and it was then that I realized that the wetness on my chair in the class before was probably blood (the chairs are black) and the person in the class after would probably find it when they wipe down there chair and desk (because of coronavirus) this happened yesterday

  • I got my first period at age 10 on April 20th, exactly a month before my 11th birthday, I woke up for the first day of school and I felt a gush of something so I ran to the bathroom and sat on the toilet texting my mom. Then, she stood there as I put a pad on cause my school had just had a talk with the girls about periods. Next thing I knew I was getting texts from everyone I knew and people who my parents were friends with. Ahh Caribbean moms.

  • I just started my period, like, 2 minutes ago. I was in the pool out back and a red stain in the water came around me. My 8 year old brother and 6 year old sister saw everything. The most embarrassing say ever!

  • My period started when I was 13. It was over the summer luckily, so I didn’t have to worry about getting it at school. I remember wiping and seeing blood on the toilet paper. I actually thought that my butt was bleeding for some strange reason, but then it occurred to me that it could be my period. I was VERY upset because my cousins and I were going to the pool in the evening and I DID NOT want to wear a tampon on my first day. (I was so terrified at the thought of a tampon) The other thing was that I was on vacation without my parents. (It was just my sister and I) I went upstairs and told my sister. She just laughed and told me that she had pads in her suitcase. I was incredibly happy that evening to find out that we were not actually going to go to the pool since we were all tired!

  • I got my first period on a train from Amsterdam to Vienna while traveling with my parents. There was very little toilet paper in the train bathroom. I did not know what to do. Later at the hotel my Mother said, your a woman now … handed me a tampax with no instruction and closed the door leaving me in there to fend for myself. My sister did not give me any support. I cant remember how long it took me to figure out how to use tampons, but very grateful for themas I was a dancer. Many young girls in India do not have access to clean Menstruation products or have proper cleanliness practices for their menses and so many stop going to school at this time … it is slowly changing but so many need help.

  • I was in 5th grade, one morning as I was peeing I noticed my stained underwear I cried out for help. My mom came in and I told her I had cut myself somehow (I had no idea what periods were). She just said “Oh, oooh” handed me a pad, told me “put this on” and left. I thought it was a giant band-aid.

  • I got my period when I was 15. I was at home and when I used the bathroom, I looked down to see red water and what looked like small chunks of flesh. I rushed to my mother absolutely terrified. I remember feeling so ashamed and embarrassed of my body. Despite having my mother around and an older sister too, I was completely unprepared and unaware of what having a period would actually look like. No one told me what to expect or that blood clots would be normal during the first day or two.

I didn’t have my first talk about periods with my sister until I was diagnosed with endometriosis at age 23; that’s the same time I learned both her and my mother have it as well.

  • I was 13, it was Thanksgiving at my Grandmother’s, I had gone to the bathroom and noticed. I was personally embarrassed because I knew what I needed and didn’t have it. Older female cousin to the rescue, she had supplies in the car. Whole family knew but nobody made it a big deal.

  • When I got my first period I was 13 and I thought I was sick at first because it was very light and brownish and I panicked. It was not lots of bright red blood like I always assumed it would be. When my mom explained it to me later I was relieved there wasn’t something wrong with me!

  • I got my first period during lunch time in high school. I was 14. I was in the bathroom stall next to my friend and said aloud “holy crap I got my period!” She yelled over “what’s the big deal? Put a pad on!” And I said “no, it’s my first EVER period” and she was like “ohhhhh, woah!!”. A also remember telling my mom and pleading with her not to tell my dad! I was so embarrassed for some reason! Later in the week I had a birthday pool party to go to. My mom gave me a box of tampons and showed me the manual. She waited in the car for me to put one in. I ended up jamming in the tampon along with one piece of the cardboard and thought “gosh it is painful to be a woman!”. When I got in her car 15 minutes later and sat down I began to cry because it hurt so bad. My mom then had to explain to me more in depth how to use a tampon!

  • I got my period more toward the beginning of sixth grade. I had been anxious and excited to finally get mine after learning about it in sex ed and talking to my mom about it, and knowing that the next step meant BOOBS! Gotta have ‘em! Yessss! It was a weekend day, and my mom never has to work her hospital job on the weekend, but this particular day of course she happens to have to. I get in the shower in the late morning and see dark red blood and think “Uh I think this is it?!” But I realize only my dad is home, ugh! So I climb out the shower, stuff some toilet paper between my legs, wrap my towel around me and run to grab the cordless house phone to call my mom from the bathroom. Within a hour or two she comes home with a box of pads and I show her a wad of toilet paper and say “why’s it so clumpy and dark? Are you sure this is it? Isn’t it usually bright red and thin?” And she said “Yep that’s it! That’s the lining of your uterus shedding and I’m sure the color will change a lot in the first few months of you having it but it’s completely normal in all it’s variations.” Then she took me out to lunch and I was too embarrassed to tell my Dad myself but I’m sure she told him why she came home from work early. A few days later, my Dad wrote me a beautiful letter about my becoming a woman and dating and that avoided some of the awkwardness so that was really nice. One thing I wish I’d known back then was that organic, all cotton period products greatly reduce my cramping! Took 14 years of periods to learn but I’m so glad I found Lola!

  • OMG!!! I had no clue about periods! I was maybe 12 and my dad had died almost a year before and I was still kind of shocked. So I go to pee and see blood and am in full blood panic, because blood “down there,” had to mean impending death! I run to tell my mom, who promptly and firmly slaps me hard across my face! SO I am dying and now I am being abused by my mom? Nope, turns out an old Eastern European Jewish custom is to smack your daughter across the face as hard as possible is how Mom greets your first period…GOOD TIMES!!!

  • A few days before I got my period at the age of 12, I had just finished reading the book, “Dear God, It’s Me Margaret by Judy Blume.” As a matter of fact, the actual date was Oct 31st, Halloween. I was using the bathroom at my neighbors house and when I went to wipe I noticed there was a hint of blood on the tissue. I told my neighbor who was shocked and a little older than me. She told me that we had to go tell my mom. Once I told my mom, she responded, “Is this a trick or treat?”….Years later, I must admit I don’t feel prepared for menopause.

  • I got my first period when I was 9. My mom had told me all about it since she had started young, so luckily I was fully prepared. What she didn’t tell me is that my friend’s wouldn’t likely start until middle or highschool. I told my friend about it and she went home crying which resulted in her mom calling mine. Whoops! That particular friend did not start until highschool, but I was very fortunate to have a mom who helped prepare me when I couldn’t relate to anyone else!

  • I was a freshman in high school. It was over Christmas break and I was visiting my dad and step-mom with my sisters , who surprisingly had started before me even though I was older. I was getting ready to shower and noticed these dark spots in my panties but didn’t think it was anything major sadly. I used the restroom again before I went to bed and realized that color was in my panties again and figured I started my period. I told one of my sisters who had pads to give me some because I had finally started my period lol. Once I was back home with my grandpa who raised I told him and he went to the store to get me pads. Luckily for me starting my period wasn’t weird or stressful because I had a lot of sisters and girl cousins around and I was older but second semester of high school was different with dealing with periods, when will they come and being involved in sports.
