Time for an oil change: your guide to using oils in your beauty routine

Walking into CAP Beauty’s West Village boutique is like falling down a rabbit hole and ending up in a wellness wonderland. Eat me! Drink me! Slather me all over your skin! The shop is a refuge from the city outside, and is filled with magical potions that may transform your life…or at the very least, your skin. It’s a candy store for beauty and health-obsessed adults complete with a downstairs spa. Think: lymphatic drainage facials, facial rejuvenation acupuncture, and something called The Tata Harper Golden Hour that we’re pretty sure is what heaven is like.

Friends for almost 20 years and now business partners, Kerrilynn Pamer and Cindy DiPrima share a passion for wellness and have become experts in all things natural beauty. Their shelves are stocked with products from well-known empires like RMS Beauty, Moon Juice or SW Basics of BK to more niche finds like a mushroom hot cacao with reishi, a “joy tonic,” or their very own flower essence designed with Lotus Wei aptly titled “The CAPtivator”.

Their philosophy: “beauty is wellness and wellness is beauty.” Kerrilynn and Cindy speak fluent oils so we sat down with them for a lesson in the beauty basics of using the power of plants. According to this beauty dream team, “Oils are so popular because they are incredibly multifunctional and add ease to your routine. You can remove makeup, cleanse, and moisturize, all with oil. Oil cleansing is very softening and balancing and leaves the skin feeling hydrated.” Facial oils have been around for centuries, but lately they’ve been the buzz of the beauty world. “Brands are creating really unique and potent blends that are increasing their popularity,” CAP’s dynamic duo explain. Here are their favorite oils to use regularly to glow from the inside out.

1. Sea buckthorn: “This is a fantastic oil that’s especially great for skin prone to redness or rosacea. It’s used for burn victims. It’s really healing,” Kerrilynn explains, adding that, like most beauty oils, it’s also loaded with antioxidants and omegas. Try Sibu Beauty’s Sea buckthorn seed oil. Sibu’s founder scaled Everest and came back bearing Sea buckthorn berries that he uses to make this powerful oil that fights wrinkles and age spots.

2. Coconut oil: “Coconut oil has this reputation as being an all-purpose oil, but it’s not an oil for everyone or everything,” Cindy explains. Kerrilynn adds: “Don’t put it on your face. It has a different molecular structure than the skin, so it sits on top of the skin and doesn’t penetrate. It can cause congestion, breakouts and bacterial overgrowth.” Cindy recommends coconut oil only for people with dry, very stable skin who don’t break out much. Both ladies recommend only using coconut oil on your hair if you have very dry, thick hair. It can be too oily or hard to wash out for most other hair types.

3. Jojoba oil: Jojoba (pronounced ho-ho-buh) is the most biocompatible oil so it’s great to use on your face. Try RMS’ Beauty oil, a blend of jojoba, rosehip and buriti oil (great to protect the skin from the sun’s rays) and other exotic oils and rare herbal extracts for an infusion of antioxidants. “Jojoba oil is perfect for balancing oily skin because its molecular structure is very similar to that of our own sebum,” Cindy and Kerrilynn explain. For a DIY mask, blend tocos, jojoba oil and honey. The honey is purifying and antibacterial, the tocos are packed with vitamins D and E and the jojoba oil makes it incredibly hydrating.

4. Rosehip oil: “Rosehip oil is particularly high in antioxidants. It’s great for feminine health and can help to alleviate PMS symptoms and cramps. It helps to topically balance your hormones,” says Kerrilynn. Try it in May Lindstrom’s The Youth Dew, a blend of twenty plant and botianical oils including Rosehip, avocado, jojoba, olive and more infused with CoEnzyme Q-10 and designed to regenerate and hydrate the skin.“Rosehip oil is beautiful for washing your face,” says Kerrilynn.

5. Grapeseed oil: “Grapeseed oil is a nice, basic, all-inclusive oil that works well on the skin and has tons of antioxidants,” says Cindy. Plus, it’s a great heat-resistant oil to cook with. Try Vinter’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum with grapeseed oil, plus hazelnut, rosehip, avocado, carrot seed, turmeric root, bergamot peel and other nutrient-rich magical extracts and herbs.

6. Olive oil: This pantry staple is a delicious addition to any meal, and it’s also a natural beauty oil to put on your skin. “Blend raw organic sugar and olive oil and use as a body scrub,” Cindy recommends for a DIY exfoliating blend using pantry staples. And when in doubt, add any beauty oil to the bath. Try adding a bit of coconut oil to the tub, but be warned, says Cindy, “it’s really slippery when you get out!” Kerrilynn adds: “You can add essential oils for a more beautiful experience like lavender or jasmine oil in small amounts.”
