Welcome to First Period Stories, the LOLA series where members of the LOLA community share the story of getting their first period. These accounts are funny, sweet, and sentimental, but all speak to a shared first period experience. Here is Sarah’s First Period Story:
I got my first period when I was really young. I was 9 years old and one of my best friends at the time was sleeping over, she was on my little trundle bed. I woke up in the middle of the night and everything was wet. I remember my sheets had like a big stain on them, but it was dark so I wasn’t sure what it was. I ran into my parent’s room, woke up my mom, and I remember her first reaction was like, “Well that can’t be your period.” I was only 9 and she was a pretty late bloomer, so that didn’t seem within the realm of possibility.
She came into the room and looked and I remember her saying, “Oh my god, that was your period.”
So, while my friend was sleeping in the trundle bed, my mom and I are frantically changing my sheets, taking off the mattress protector and putting a towel down. My mom, you know, gave me a super thick pad, and I went back to sleep like nothing had happened. I remember the next morning my friend asking me what that was all about and I was really vague about it because nobody I knew had talked about periods at my age. I think we had a brief sex ed class with our school nurse, but I didn’t know anybody who had their period or really knew what a period entailed. So, I kept it to myself for a really long time. Once we got to middle school age, people started talking about periods and I could be more open about it, but I kept it to myself ages 9-12, I would say. So that’s my first period story.
