Welcome to First Period Stories, the LOLA series where members of the LOLA community share the story of getting their first period. These accounts are funny, sweet, and sentimental, but all speak to a shared first period experience. Here is Jamie’s First Period Story:
I was 10 years old when I got my first period and I remember very distinctly my mom was in the shower getting ready for work.
I came into the bathroom and just was like, “Uh, I don’t know what happened.” So, she kind of freaked out.
She only had tampons and she did not want me to use tampons. She ran to the gas station to get pads and while she was gone, she told me to grab my swishy black wind pants. When she got home, she grabbed her tube socks from, like, 1972, the ones with the gold stripes on top, put them on me, stuffed all these pads in them, and then told me to put my wind pants over it. And she told me: “This way, nobody will be able to tell that you’re walking around with pads stuffed in your pants. If you have to go to the bathroom, nobody will see you grab pads. You can just leave like normal and come back like nothing happened.” Never met anybody else with pads in their tube socks when they got their first period, so props to my mom for her inventiveness. And I do think it worked, because I didn’t have to grab anything on my way to the bathroom at school, so hopefully I was undetected. And that’s my first period story.
