Welcome to First Period Stories, the LOLA series where members of the LOLA community share the story of getting their first period. These accounts are funny, sweet, and sentimental, but all speak to a shared first period experience. Here is Elea’s First Period Story:
So I got my first period when I was 12 years old, it was the summer and I was at a church camp. I’d been having this really weird stomach ache, or so I thought, for a couple of days, and all of the sudden, one night, I was going to bed, I was getting undressed, and I looked into my underwear and there was something there, kind of a brownish color. I thought because I had a stomach ache, maybe I had an accident in my pants, but that would be weird because I was 12 years old, like, I would have known. So, I’m zoomed into the crotch of my underwear, looking, trying to figure out what was going on, when the preacher’s daughter walked in on me. And she was like, “Oh my gosh, what are you doing?” I was like, “I don’t know! There’s something in my panties and I don’t know what it is!”
So, she walks over–she was a couple years older than me–checks it out, and she’s like, “You got your period!”
And I was like, “Okay, yay, I guess?” I was supposed to have some water sports the next day, some tubing on the lake, and I was pretty nervous about it. I thought maybe I should pretend I was really sick and not do it. But, she was like, “Don’t worry, I’ll show you how to use a tampon.” She walked me into the bathroom, she showed me what to do kind of, with her hands, and I was able to figure it out and still have a relatively good time for the rest of the week. It wasn’t so bad–I was actually kind of thankful that my first time I was able to learn how to use a tampon because I think it saved me some anxiety further down the road. And that was my first period story.
