Welcome to First Period Stories, the LOLA series where members of the LOLA community share the story of getting their first period. These accounts are funny, sweet, and sentimental, but all speak to a shared first period experience. Here is Angelika’s First Period Story:
I think I was around 12 years old when I first got my period but it was no big deal at all because I had an older sister, so I knew exactly what was going on, even though my mom never talked much about it.
The only thing I remember was that my sister was concerned with how you take a bath.
My mom told her, “You don’t. You take a shower when you have your period.” That’s what my biggest concern was. I grew up in Russia, so basically we don’t talk about periods at all, and at that time, when I was growing up, or at least in my family, we didn’t use pads. Now, it’s very eco-friendly, but at that time, I was so embarrassed because we had to use, like, gauze pads, which would then have to be washed and even boiled in hot water to make sure that they were sterilized. So, for that, I felt very, very uncomfortable having a period and I never talked to any of my friends about it. When I got my first paycheck, the first thing I went to buy was the regular, normal pads that everyone was using, and I never wished to go back to using cloth pads ever again. And that was my first period story.
