Welcome to First Period Stories, the LOLA series where members of the LOLA community share the story of getting their first period. These accounts are funny, sweet, and sentimental, but all speak to a shared first period experience. Here is Alina’s First Period Story:
I got my first period when I was 16. My mom brought me to a doctor’s office because she thought it was too late. The doctor was really positive and she reassured me that it was fine and I was actually lucky because I skipped a couple of years [of having a period]. Interestingly enough, I got it just a couple of months after that appointment. I was very surprised by the way it looked because in advertisements, we always see it as this purplish-blue color spilled on a pad. It was actually kind of brownish and had a kombucha tea texture, so I was worried.
I showed it to my mom and she told me it was perfectly fine, she was happy it finally came.
In the beginning, I remember struggling with pads, these big, huge cotton pads because I thought the adhesive part actually went onto your body, not onto your panties–I think it was a lack of education. And that was my first period story.
