What’s the best way to keep the vaginal area clean and healthy when hiking and camping? Often, there isn’t access to showers or clean water. Are there any things I need to consider when going on camping trips and spending my days hiking?
I love this question, as I used to be a mountaineering guide and was out in the backcountry for 30 days at a time. Wipes, localized washing, and keeping your underwear clean are the most important things to remember in the backcountry. You absolutely can keep the vulva and surrounding area clean — even if you aren’t fully immersed in a bath or shower! I love the hypoallergenic LOLA wipes for this. They carry well and can be used for front to back wiping (yes, that is an important direction to wipe, especially in the backcountry). You can also alternate with dry toilet paper, too, for less weight in your pack. Find a private place to wash your vulva, perineal, and anal area with fresh water and a gentle soap every few days (warm water works best, but not too hot). Last, but not least, keep your undies clean. Hand-washing and hang drying works great and takes very little time. The other tip that I typically give, especially to my female clients , is to stay well hydrated and consume less refined sugar. This will help you decrease your risk for yeast and/or UTI infections which are not something you want to deal with out there! Have fun!
