What are some natural supplements to take for lack of sex drive? (I’m in perimenopause.)
I wish I could give a list of some supplements to try, but it is not that easy. Individualized medicine is important for the effective use of any natural medicine in cases of low sex drive.
Low libido, or interest in sex, can be for many reasons. Hormonal changes such as during menopause, postpartum, or periods of high stress are the most common reasons I see for lowered libido in women. There may also be intimacy factors which can present in psychosomatic symptoms of decreased interest in sex. The best way to support this concern is by addressing the imbalances through a multifaceted approach, which starts by identifying the root cause(s).
In perimenopause, hormonal changes can lead to lowered libido through two primary mechanisms. Commonly, lowered testosterone can lead to a lack of interest. Sex may also be painful due to lowered amounts of estrogen which can lead to thinning of the vaginal tissue and a higher likelihood for infection. The treatment doesn’t always mean you would need to replace these hormones. It looks different for each individual and based on family and individual medical history, different recommendations would be applied.
