My 3-year-old girl and I both seem to get grumpy toward each other like clockwork. Is it possible my little one is affected by my menstrual cycle?
I don’t have a precise medical answer here, but my hypothesis is related to hormone levels. Young children have been found to have small but detectable diurnal variations in estradiol (a form of estrogen). It is well known that women who live together often get their periods at the same time of the month. I am wondering if you and your daughter have synced your estradiol levels to some extent, and perhaps she is extra sensitive to the slight increase in her level of estrogen. There will not be a definitive answer to this question until she enters puberty. At that point, you will see how pubertal levels of estradiol affect her mood.
