I've had my hormonal IUD since January 2017 and haven't had a "real" period since. There is occasional spotting and cramps, normally around the time my roommate has her period if we've been spending a lot of time together. I had a little spotting a few weeks ago but now I am having a full out period and my roommate isn't near hers. Could the stress of the situation be causing this or is there potentially something wrong with my IUD?

I know sudden changes to your period can be stressful but I want you to know that you are not alone! Many of my patients right now have been having an irregular period. There can be a few reasons for this 1) if you are sick right now or recovering from an illness your body can pause your period as it repairs 2) increased stress during this time of shelter in place can also lead to irregular period 3) diet changes and new medications/supplements can also affect your period. I absolutely think this could be related to the stress of the pandemic – I would watch to see what happens over the next few cycles and if you are having heavier periods it would be worth checking in with your primary care doctor.
