Is it possible to get my period back by minimizing exercise? How long will it take to get it back?
Over exercising or regular intense strenuous exercise can indeed cause the frequency and character of your period to change. In some cases your period can stop completely. This phenomenon, known as exercise induced amenorrhea, can be compounded by inadequate or poor nutrition, and excessive weight loss. In general, this signals that your body is under a lot of stress. For the most part, exercise is good for you and has positive effects on your period, and well being. Occasional breakthrough bleeding, early periods or late periods are not a huge concern if you just started exercising, increased the intensity of your workouts, or are losing weight. But if you notice a missed period for two or three months in a row, check in with your doctor to have a full evaluation to get at the root cause of your period issue.
