I have always had a heavy flow. Always. Many days multiple tampons at once heavy. I’m 51 and still have heavy flow however now my periods last for longer than usual, they are erratic, and I bleed through like I’m not even using a tampon or pad. Is this normal at the start of menopause?

It is very normal to have a shift to irregular periods before periods stop. During perimenopause, or the years leading up to menopause, the periods often become heavy and irregular, sometimes closer together first before they become lighter and farther apart. Once you haven’t had your period for a year, then you are considered menopausal for 24 hrs, and postmenopausal after that.
