Do your periods get heavier as you age? Does PMS also change with age?
Yes, indeed it may! Seeing heavier periods as you age is most likely caused by Perimenopause, or the transition to menopause usually begins around age 40. During this time, individuals may experience a myriad of symptoms, including irregular bleeding and heavier bleeding due to the falling levels of estrogen. Other symptoms like worsening PMS symptoms, hot flashes, trouble sleeping, breast tenderness, vaginal dryness, mood swings may appear as well. Heavier bleeding is common during perimenopause, but many other conditions can cause this as well. It’s always a good idea to speak with your doctor when you experience changes in your period in order to rule out underlying causes.
