Can I take my combination birth control pills at a different time every day and still be protected from pregnancy as long as I take 1 pill everyday? (e.g., 9am Monday, 10pm Tuesday, 4pm Wednesday)
Most combination oral contraceptive pills have a 24 hour life and hormone levels begin to fall after 24 hours. In most cases, it is fine to take your pill 2-3 hours late. However you may not have the best possible protection from pregnancy, and may have fluctuating hormone levels if the pill is taken later than that. If you take the progestin only pill “the mini pill” it is even more important to take your pills on time. To help with this issue, you can try to take your pills with daily activities that you generally perform at the same time everyday, like brushing your teeth. This may help increase your success taking your pills around the same time.
