Can a hormonal IUD cause a low sex drive?
It depends! For some women, any form of oral or topical hormone therapy, even IUDs, can cause a lowered sex drive. For others, hormonal IUDs which contain progestin only have either no effect on libdio, or can increase desire and sexual spontaneity. Progestin is released with the use of hormonal IUDs, which can suppress hormonal fluctuations and sometimes even lead to lowered estrogen levels. This can lower desire and libido, similar to how some women feel in menopause. If you notice a change in libido, chat with your doctor about this possibility. It might be worth changing your birth control method for a period of time to see if you notice any difference.
