Are there any good herbal products that can be taken for PMS?
In order to understand what treatment for premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is best for you, you will definitely want to work with your women’s health provider. My approach with patients is multimodal and individualized. We work on gut health, diet, any predisposing lifestyle factors, in addition to using targeted nutritional and/or botanical options. Since there often is an interplay of how fluctuating hormones impact neurotransmitters, I find this multifaceted approach most effective long-term.
With that said, there are certain nutrients/botanicals that show promise in the research:
- Calcium. There is a strong link between low dietary calcium intake and symptoms of PMS. You can find out if supplemental calcium is right for you through your healthcare provider. You can read more about this here.
- Other nutrients and botanicals that show promise include: Gingko, Magnesium, Vitamin B6, Vitamin E, Saffron, and Vitex.
I do not recommend self-prescribing even natural agents since there can be contraindications and interactions with medications. Discuss these options with your doctor. More information about the research and effectiveness of these various options can be found on the Natural Medicine Research Database.
